Cultivated Building Materials

with Chair of Architecture and Construction Dirk E. Hebel at ETH University

The 21st century will face a radical paradigm shift in how we produce construction materials - a move towards sustainably cultivating, breeding, raising, farming, or growing future resources. The book presents new industrialised production methods and innovative cultivated building materials, like cement grown by bacteria, bricks made of mushroom mycelium or bamboo fibres as reinforcement for concrete. Aiming to bridge scientific research to product development and application, the book describes the contributions of a wide range of professionals and innovators.
